Paul Timman “is one of the giants in the industry, coined ‘The Rembrandt of Sunset Strip’ by the Wall Street Journal. Paul’s clients include Angelina Jolie, Pamela Anderson and Ben Affleck. For the former art student (department of sculpture & glass) from Cleveland the tattoo is a ‘living symbol of feeling’.” – Der Spiegel; Germany’s largest newspaper

“Paul is one of the leading tattoo artists in the world and recognized as a specialist in tribal and traditional Japanese designs.”

For Paul, art and tattooing are a perfect mix. After graduating from the Cleveland Institute of Art he began tattooing out of his apartment. As word spread and he outgrew his premises Paul joined the Toledo Tattoo Company. A year later Paul moved to Hollywood, and began working at Sunset Strip Tattoo, the most famous tattoo parlor in the country. More than ten years later Paul is one of the leading tattoo artists in the world and recognized as a specialist in tribal and traditional Japanese designs.

According to a 2006 study by the American Academy of Dermatology 24% of Americans 18-50 and 35% of Americans 18-29 have tattoos. As more and more people get tattoos, combined with the explosion of tattoos in the media, top artists are becoming increasingly influential in pop culture. Paul has been quoted in newspapers from L.A. to Berlin. He has been featured on The Star Treatment on A&E where he talked about creating tattoos for Drew Barrymore and Angelina Jolie and VH1′s “Show me your tats” where he described making house calls to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, and tattooing Tommy Lee on his kitchen table.

Paul’s A-list clientele has also led to work painting temporary tattoos for film, television, and commercials. Now, Paul is coming full circle to his start in glass and inking his world renowned designs on porcelain.

Describe your work in three words

Clean, colorful, different.

Who and what are your greatest influences?

Everything and everyone. I take everything that the world has to offer and then I put it back out there so the world can view my interpretation of it.

How did you start working with Ink Dish?

They blackmailed me.

“When I was a kid I used to go outside and dig up clay from the earth and make things with it. I guess I’ve gone full circle with it now.”

Describe your first set of dinnerware.

My first set of dinnerware is very classically designed tattoo imagery that adapted seamlessly to tableware.

What is your greatest achievement?

Having a family, then it would be triathlons, and motorcycle racing.

Which living artist do you most admire?

Filip Leu

How do you get inspired?

By viewing other artists’ hard work.

Where does your artistic talent come from?

My late, great father.

Do you listen to music or watch TV while you work? If so what?

Yes and no, whatever the mood calls for, more music than TV.

Describe the first piece of art you can remember making.

Clay pottery. When I was a kid I used to go outside and dig up clay from the earth and make things with it. I guess I’ve come full circle with it now.

Any thoughts on the future of dinnerware decoration?

I have a lot of ideas I would like to put down on paper for great tattoo tableware.

What’s next for Paul Timman?

A nap.
